How to bathe your dog at home safely

This guide is for a healthy dog having an ordinary bath. Cats and other animals may need different handling and usually should not be bathed using a dog routine. If your pet has a skin problem, wounds, pain, or a prescribed medicated shampoo, ask your veterinary practice for instructions first.

Set up before you start

• Use a secure, non-slip surface and lukewarm water. Keep the room warm and the door closed so your dog cannot bolt into a road or cold outdoor area.
• Choose a shampoo made for dogs. Human shampoo can irritate a dog’s skin; use medicated products only when your vet advises it.
• Brush out loose hair and tangles before adding water. If the coat is badly matted, painful to brush or close to the skin, ask a professional groomer for help rather than cutting mats with scissors.
• Put towels and treats within reach. A second adult can help steady a worried dog without pinning them down.

A calmer bath, step by step

1. Let your dog explore the dry bathing area first. Reward relaxed behaviour; if they panic, pause and practise in shorter sessions another day.
2. Wet the body gradually with lukewarm water. Avoid spraying the face and do not direct water into the ears, nose or eyes.
3. Follow the shampoo label. Keep product away from the eyes and mouth, and rinse thoroughly until no residue remains. Leftover shampoo can irritate skin.
4. Towel-dry and keep your dog warm. Avoid a hairdryer unless your dog is comfortable with it and you can use a cool setting at a safe distance; hot air can burn. Blue Cross gives dog-bathing safety advice.
5. Give your dog a quiet break and check the skin for new redness or irritation.

Bathing frequency depends on coat, activity and health—not a fixed schedule for every dog. If bathing seems to make itching, redness, smell or flaking worse, stop using the product and ask a vet. A bath can clean a coat, but it does not diagnose or treat a skin condition.
