Pet eye problems - signs that need prompt veterinary advice
Redness, watering or discharge around an eye can have several causes. An infection is only one possibility; irritation, injury and other eye conditions can look similar. Because some eye problems worsen quickly, do not try to diagnose or treat them at home.
Contact a veterinary practice promptly if you notice
- squinting, holding the eye closed, rubbing, or clear signs of pain;
- a cloudy or suddenly bulging eye, marked swelling, or a visible wound;
- yellow, green or blood-coloured discharge;
- a sudden change in vision, bumping into objects, or unequal-looking pupils.
If there has been trauma or a chemical splash, contact an emergency veterinary service immediately and follow its instructions. Do not put human eye drops, old prescriptions, tea, saline mixtures or other products in the eye unless a veterinary professional tells you to. Avoid trying to remove an object that is stuck or embedded.

While you arrange advice
Keep your pet from rubbing the eye if you can do so safely. Do not force handling if it causes distress. Bring any eye products or medication labels to the appointment, and take a clear photo only if this does not delay care. A vet can examine the eye and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
