When a fire, flood or other emergency develops, there may be little time to decide what to do. A simple plan made in advance helps you move your pet without delaying your household’s safety. Follow local emergency services first; do not enter a dangerous area or return for belongings.
Decide these things before an emergency

Practise the exit
Keep carriers, leads and identification easy to find. Make sure each animal can be safely caught and transported; practise short, positive carrier or vehicle sessions before you need them. If you have multiple pets, assign a person and carrier to each one. Do not assume a frightened animal will respond to its name or come when called.
During an evacuation
- Follow official instructions and leave early when advised.
- Secure your pet using a carrier, lead or other safe restraint before opening doors.
- Take essential medication, food, water, bowls, waste supplies and the emergency kit if it is immediately accessible.
- Tell your contact where you are going and update identification details if you are displaced.
- Keep pets contained at the destination; unfamiliar places and noise can make escape more likely.
Do not leave an animal behind if you can safely take them, but never put people or responders at risk. If you cannot evacuate an animal safely, tell emergency responders exactly where the pet is and what help is needed.
